College Application Essays – Don’t Stress Out Over Them

Stressing over college application essays is normal but there are strategies to help minimize stress and make the experience more manageable and even pleasurable. Here are some tips:

  • Start Early: Procrastination can lead to stress. Begin the writing process well in advance and give yourself ample time to brainstorm, draft, and revise. Remember, writing begins with thoughts so if you’re thinking about narratives, you’ve actually already begun writing!

  • Break It Down: Writing an essay can be a daunting process. Begin by dividing the essay into smaller tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, outlining, crafting a draft, and editing. Tackling smaller tasks can make the process seem less overwhelming and will keep you on track.

  • Reflect on Yourself: Reflect on your experiences, values, and goals. Take note of these reflections. Knowing yourself well will make conveying your uniqueness easier.

  • Choose the Right Topic: Select a topic that aligns with the essay prompt and allows you to showcase your personality and character. List the keywords that describe you and try to utilize them in your word selection. It helps to choose a subject you are passionate about.

  • Be Authentic: Colleges are interested in getting to know you. Be genuine and honest in your writing. Don’t try creating a version of yourself that the colleges want to see.

  • Seek Feedback: Share your drafts with teachers, peers, and family. Constructive feedback can provide valuable insights and help improve your essay.

  • Revise and Edit: By giving yourself ample time, you’ll have time to refine your work. Take the time to revise and edit your essay for clarity, coherence, and grammar.

  • Take Breaks: The process takes time and you should aim to take breaks. Don’t try to write essays in one sitting. Relax, clear your mind, and perhaps exercise. This can help you return to your writing with a fresh perspective Tip: Set a time limit for your breaks!

  • Manage Expectations: Not every outline or draft will be perfect, and that’s okay. Don’t be too hard on yourself!

  • Celebrate Milestones: Each time you craft an outline or finish an essay, celebrate your progress because with each step, you are closer to finishing your applications.

  • College application essays should be approached positively. Remember that they’re offering you the opportunity to stand out from your peers and increase your chances of acceptance.
